Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing no sound in the application, or do not hear the music,
please check your system volume:
1. Double click the speaker icon on the lower right of your Windows screen.
2. Make sure all the volume and balance sliders are set to medium levels, and
that none of the mute boxes are checked.
If there is still no sound, it is possible that the program's internal volume is
incorrectly set. Please follow these steps to adjust the volume:
1. Launch Space Academy GX-1 and sign in.
2. Click the Adult Options button at the lower left of the main menu screen.
3. In the Sound Volume box, choose Use System Volume.
4. Click Play.
If you hear sound but not music (on the main menu screen, for example), your
computer may be missing a cable connector between your CD drive and your sound
card. To test this, insert an audio CD into the drive and play it. If you do
not hear music, you are probably missing the cable. Contact your computer
manufacturer to correct this.
If the application window does not fit on the screen, or if your desktop icons
are scrambled when you exit Space Academy GX-1, you can use the Adult Options
section to disable Resolution Switching. This will cause the program to run in
a smaller window, with the size dependent on your monitor's resolution setting.
If you are experiencing slow performance, erratic program behavior, or error
messages, there are several possible causes.
A common cause of trouble occurs when trying to run the program on a system that
is below minimum specifications. Please check the System Requirements section
above and make sure your computer meets them.
Another common issue involves file corruption. This can have a variety of
causes and symptoms, but the solution is straightforward: remove the program
and reinstall it using the following steps.
1. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select Space Academy GX-1.
4. Click the Add/Remove . . . button.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Reinstall the Space Academy GX-1 and run the program.
If the uninstallation program does not complete successfully, you will need to
manually remove the application. The following steps will do that.
1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop
2. Double-click the C: drive icon.
3. Double-click the Program Files folder icon.
4. Double-click the Edmark folder icon.
5. Click the Space Academy GX-1 folder, highlighting it.
6. Verify that you have the correct folder highlighted, then click the File
pull-down menu and select Delete.
7. If prompted, click Yes to confirm the delete. If additional prompts appear,
click Yes or Yes to All.
8. Close all windows opened during this process.
9. Reinstall the Space Academy GX-1 and run the program.
If file corruption was not the issue, Space Academy GX-1 may be conflicting with
an application running in the background. Many programs launch when your PC
starts and stay invisibly in the background, waiting for you to need them. Most
of these are useful but few or none are essential. The following steps will
stop these programs from starting.
1. Click START then RUN.
2. Type WIN.INI and press Enter.
3. Towards the top of the text file that opens you will see a line beginning
with LOAD= and a line beginning with RUN=. Type a semicolon ( ; ) as the first
character in each line (e.g. ;LOAD=)
4. Click FILE then SAVE, FILE again then EXIT.
5. Right click on your START button.
6. Left click on OPEN.
7. Double click the yellow folder titled PROGRAMS.
8. Double click the yellow folder titled STARTUP.
9. If there are any icons in here, please move them to a different window.
10. Close all open windows.
11. Restart the computer.
12. When Windows comes back up, try running your program.
If you are still experiencing problems, try deleting any temporary files and
running Scandisk as described below.
While running, most programs create temporary files on your hard drive to speed
performance. Usually, these files are deleted invisibly, but several things can
cause them to build up on your drive. When there are too many of them you will
experience a variety of odd problems in Windows and in applications running
under Windows.
To delete temporary files, follow these steps:
1. Click Start Shut Down.
2. Click Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and then click Yes.
3. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type: DEL %TEMP%\*.TMP and press Enter
4. Type: EXIT and press Enter. This returns you to Windows.
Scandisk will find and repair many types of physical and logical errors on your
hard drive. Please refer to Windows Help for further information on Scandisk.
To run Scandisk, follow these steps:
1. Click Start Programs Accessories System Tools Scandisk.
2. Select all hard drives listed and click Start.
3. When Scandisk is finished, click Close.
4. Click Start Shutdown.
5. Select Restart the Computer and then click OK.
6. Once the computer has restarted, run Space Academy GX-1.
If none of these solutions worked, the program may be having trouble using some
part of your computer's hardware. Each hardware item is controlled by a piece
of software called a driver, and the driver must support whatever function the
program is executing. As software features expand, hardware manufacturers
update these drivers. Contact the manufacturers of your video card, sound card,
and CD-ROM drive to obtain the latest version of their drivers.
It is also possible that a device has no driver or the driver is configured
incorrectly. You can check this using Windows' Device Manager:
1. Click Start Settings Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
This will display a list of all the devices installed on your system, usually in
alphabetical order. Incorrectly installed devices will have a yellow
exclamation point or a red X next to their names. If none of these are visible,
look for a device category called "Unknown Devices". If you have any of these
problems, contact the relevant hardware manufacturer to resolve them.
